PGA TOUR

It is not easy to pinpoint the exact beginning of the PGA TOUR. Certainly, professional golfers have competed against each other since the earliest days of the game in the United States. The modern-day PGA TOUR, a membership group of professional golfers that plays more than 100 official money events on three Tours – the PGA TOUR, Champions Tour and Nationwide Tour - was formed in 1975.

Timothy W. Finchem became the TOUR’s third Commissioner in 1994 and instituted a restructuring program to strengthen the TOUR’s core business – competitions. As a result, in 2007 the three Tours will compete in over 100 events in six countries and 36 states for approximately $340 million in prize money. The competitive scope of the PGA TOUR, Champions Tour and Nationwide Tour is broader than anyone could have imagined.

A new era in golf began in 2007 on the PGA TOUR with an exciting season-long points competition called the FedExCup. The FedExCup, spanning 37 weeks, offers fans a new competition to follow on a weekly basis and gives the game its first true PGA “season”. Players are rewarded for their season-long performance and ability to rise to the occasion in the Playoffs.

The Champions Tour continues to combine extremely competitive golf for champions of the game age 50 and older with a fan-friendly platform that promotes “inside the ropes” and game improvement for its fans.

The Nationwide Tour grows as a virtual extension of the PGA TOUR. The top 25 players on the money list qualify for the TOUR the following season. Over 60 percent of its alumni make up the 2007 PGA TOUR.

With all that greatness behind us and the launch of a new era in 2007, just think what the next 100 years will bring the PGA TOUR. These players are good. And the future is even better.
